The Migraine Beauty Post No One Asked For

The alternate title was: Migraines Make My Head Feel Like It’s Exploding So I Need To Go To Bed Immediately And Can’t Take Off My Makeup but that seemed a little long.

Anyways! So Migraines. They suck. They really, really suck to the point that all you can do sometimes is crawl into bed and sleep. Basically the human version of “Have you tried turning it off then back on?”

Still, the whole crawling-into-bed-at-8pm thing can be a problem if you’re like me and wear a full face of makeup every day. Wearing makeup to bed is bad for your skin and bad for your pillow case but when it feels like there’s a rubber-band wrapped around your head and it’s getting smaller it’s a little difficult to a 10-step K-beauty routine or even just wash your face.

But I’ve got you covered!

The absolute first thing you want to do when you get a migraine (or feel one coming on. Sidenote: sometimes migraines just appear out of nowhere with no warning like a vengeful little fairy and sometimes they appear and you’re like ohhh shit I didn’t drink any water today welp) is take something. Whatever your drug of choice is I don’t judge.

Excedrin (or off brand Excedrin)

Mine is Excedrin. It’s caffeine and acetaminophen (Tylenol) and it really helps. Sometimes it makes a migraine go away entirely and sometimes it just dulls the pain.

The second thing you want to do is drink water

This octopus is telling you to drink more water

Keep a water bottle filled up and next to you or your bed at all times. Hydration is key! My migraines are exacerbated by dehydration but keeping hydrated is important all the time.

Once that’s covered go to BED. Sleep! But before you do that please take your makeup off. I know it feels like your entire brain matter wants to crawl out of your head via your eyes but your skin will thank you in the morning.

Garnier SKINACTIVE Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1 Waterproof Makeup Remover & Cleanser

This is what I use. It takes two maybe three cotton pads and you’re done. Normally I don’t like using just micellar water because I don’t feel like it gets my skin that clean but it’s much better than not taking your makeup off.

Also, brush your teeth. You should really already be doing this but do it especially now. I feel pretty gross the morning after a migraine but having a mouth that doesn’t taste like something’s died in it does wonders for your overall mood.

A cool compress also feels nice but I’m partial to Milk’s Cooling Water

I’ve mentioned it in my post about my July Sephora Play box but I really like this product. Not only does this cooling stick do the work of a cool compress it also de-puffs and adds a little moisture. The caffeine in this product is key because I wake up looking rough and I feel like this helps with minimizing that.

Another tip for helping with migraines but beauty related is making all the blood rush to your head. Yes, really. You can do it once you’re in bed by hanging your head off the side of your bed. It makes me a little dizzy but once I put my head back in its rightful place and let the blood rush back into the rest of my body I do feel better. But up to you.

The next morning is going to be rough. I won’t sugarcoat it. Although I wake up with no migraine (9 times out of 1o anyways) I still feel crummy. I feel shaky and gross and despite sleeping more than 10hrs I still feel tired. Luckily (?) because I get migraines so often I have my morning after routine pretty much down.

Your morning after kit

The absolute first thing you want to do beauty-wise: take a shower. Turn on the hot water as hot as you can stand it and let the steam and heat wake you up.

You Are Amazing Smooth It Out Exfoliating Body Scrub & Wash in Mango Papaya

This body wash/body scrub is awesome. The scent is fresh and tropical and because it’s a combo body scrub/wash the exfoliation isn’t too much. This scrub wakes me up and makes me feel human again. While I like this scrub (it’s cheap and you can find it at Target) any gentle scrub will do.

Lush Dark Angels Face and Body Cleanser

This is a cult beauty product for a reason and one of my holy grail products. You want to use this cleanser in the shower as well because it gets messy. But it’s worth it. The scrub is packed full of charcoal, black sugar, and mud (yes, mud). It exfoliates but it’s also gentle enough to use once a day. While it says it can be used on face and body I only use it on my face. It gets my skin clear and unclogs my pores. I love using it after a long trip because it really makes my skin feel clean. Literally, the only downside is how messy it is which is why I recommend using it in the shower with a washcloth.

Nooni Deep Sea Water From The East Sea Moisturizer

I got this at the Memebox super sale on a whim but man I’m so glad I did. This moisturizer feels nice, it’s lightweight, it smells good but the scent is not overpowering and it’s also cool to the touch. My skin feels dry and dehydrated after a migraine and this puts the moisture back without overdoing it so I can still wear makeup or even just a nice bb-cream. This jar is small but you really only need a little bit this moisturizer goes a long way.

TONYMOLY Panda’s Dream Brightening Eye Base

This brightening stick is awesome at making you look like you’re a real person even if you don’t feel like one. It erases dark circles and makes your eyes look brighter. The stick also has a light pleasant smell and blends easily. The little panda is adorable and small enough to take on the go. If you’re like me and buy products based on packaging alone it’s nice to know this one actually delivers. Like many Korean beauty products this stick does triple duty as a serum, concealer, and primer and if you like to feel luxurious it’s also infused with pearl extracts.  This is a key product for fixing yourself up after a migraine, a hangover or even a night crying. Truly a must have beauty product.

I’m always on the look out for migraine solutions so comment below if you have any…
